CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
What defines cruelty to animals
Animal cruelty is the crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, usually a tame one beyond necessity for normal discipline.
Cruelty to animals also called animal abuse, animal neglect or animal cruelty.
Earth (our planet) is a very beautiful place. Here all the living organisms are dependent on each other and live together.
All the living things have right to live on the earth. We humans are considered as the most intelligent species on earth, but we sometimes become very insensitive to the creatures who cannot express themselves, especially the animals. We harm them just to fulfill our needs. We must understand that animals can’t speak but they too have life.
In India cruelty and inhumanity towards animals are increasing day by day. In Mumbai there was a case in which four-man gang raped a dog. We are living in a country where not only women, but animals are not safe.
SIGNS OF ANIMAL ABUSE
Besides witnessing the abuse firsthand, it can be hard to tell when there’s cause for concern. The following are likely signs of animal abuse:
- Tugged tail, flinches at human contact
- Unexplained fractures or limping
- Unprovoked aggression, whining or whimpering
- Overly submissive (rolling onto back, tail tugged, urinating)
- Suddenly avoiding any physical contact
- Attempts to bite or scratch when patted
Some signs that an animal is being neglected can include:
- Changes in appearance, such as fur loss, dull texture, or mange
- Very skinny or sickly looking
- Obvious wounds or injuries that remain untreated
- Being left in a kennel or chained outside exclusively
Most common types of animal abuse:
The infographic below shows the most common types of animal abuse such as.
- Beating
- Burning
- Fighting
- Hoarding
- Mutilation
- Neglect
- Shooting
- Stabbing
- Throwing
- Vehicular
Mistreatment of animals is the most common form of animal cruelty. It comes in many forms which are animal fighting, torturing, beating, mutilation, abandonment, burning, neglect, starvation and much more.
According to statistics 13% of animal abuse involves domestic violence and around 70% of animal abusers also have record of other crimes. This ties in with the issue of mental health. Someone who grew up in toxic environment will pick up those traits and use them when they lash out.
For reference, there are two types of cruelty which are inflected on animals: passive cruelty and active cruelty.
Passive
cruelty has many cases of neglect. It is generally the lack of action to
prevent pain and suffering pf the animal. On other hand, active cruelty are
malicious acts in which the abuser intentionally harm animals.
In Circus
In circus animals are wrongly used for entertainment. The circus and organized animal fighting remains a big issue in today’s age. Inside the circus, animals such and elephants, tigers, bears, and monkeys are kept captive for years and go through brutal training sessions.
In Testing Labs
Another big issue in the world of animal cruelty is animal testing in labs. Over 25 million animals are being used in vivisection (experiments), product and cosmetic testing. Other than animals suffering from the stress of everyday experiments, they are often kept in small cages where they can stay for weeks. The condition they are left in can be deemed as horrific. Experiments that occur inside the labs range from testing new drugs, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skins, causing brain damage, blinding testing for makeup and more.
Did you Know?
Every year, 16,000 whales are killed for their meat and fat (used in soap, perfume, candles, cosmetics). Whales are an endangered species. Shouldn't we look for alternative materials for our needs?
In Factory Farming
Factory farming operations are designed to produce large volumes of yield for the smallest possible price. Its expensive to farm animals because animal require constant supplies of food, water, and shelter in order for them to grow large enough to be slaughtered, or to produce milk or else for human consumption. Factory farming is the result of techniques for keeping animals alive and producing at the lowest costs possible, using cost saving measures such as smaller cages and extreme confinement.
